A simple walkthrough of filing dormant accounts with Companies House, and what changes in 2028.
Dormant accounts are the simplest accounts to file. If your company has not traded, you can usually complete them in a few minutes once you know what is needed.
What dormant accounts contain
For most dormant companies, the accounts are just a simple balance sheet with a few standard notes. There is no profit and loss account because there has been no trading. Companies House provides a dormant accounts form (AA02) for companies limited by shares that have never traded.
How to file
Sign in to WebFiling with your authentication code, choose to file dormant accounts, enter your figures (often just the share capital), and submit. There is no fee to file accounts.
What changes in 2028
From April 2028, dormant accounts must be filed with commercial software in iXBRL, and the free WebFiling form closes. A simple tool will be the easiest way to keep filing. Join our waiting list to be ready.
